Legendary New Zealand designer and engineer, John Britten, ambitiously converted the former Mona Vale horse stables into his home and workshop in the 1980s. John was inspired by the London Kew Gardens and created his own magnificent glass palace filled with trees, marble and impressive limestone pillars. Unfortunately, John’s time and incredible career were both cut short when he passed away from cancer, leaving his young family to grow up in the dream home he’d left behind. 

When the house was severely damaged in Canterbury’s 2011 earthquakes, a decision had to be made regarding the Stable’s future. John’s eldest daughter, Isabelle, and her husband Tim, share their emotional renovation journey, how they stayed true to John’s vision and how they made The Stables their own.
