John Britten - The boy who did do better

$20.00 $20.00

‘The Boy Who Did Do Better’ is an inspirational, true-life story of a design-engineering genius who faced learning difficulties.

A Ducati motorcycle wins the Battle of the Twins race but the second placing is a surprise - an almost unknown motorcycle called a Britten. Little is known about the bike. Then rumour spreads that the sleek machine was hand-built by some fellow in his home workshop, in a remote place called New Zealand. In his brief life John Britten designed everything from a tool to make a tool to make a staircase, to the world's most advanced motorbike. Yet John was an abject failure at school. Seen as slow by his teachers, John's schoolbooks attest to his wonderful visualising ability and engineering understanding.

Shortlisted for LIANZA Children's Book Awards: Elsie Locke Medal for Non-Fiction 2005 and New Zealand Post Children's Book Awards: Non-Fiction Award 2005.

This is a project vey dear to Jennifer's heart. She passionately worked on the book for over 4 years, interviewing family members and gathering photographs from various archives. She sees John's story as hugely inspirational for students who are struggling at school - especially boys. The book is fully illustrated with photographs of the amazing architecture, artwork and designs he produced during his sadly short life.
